THOUSANDS of Victorian school students will get a taste of the virtual classroom early next year as a $60 million hi-tech learning system is rolled out.

About 15,000 state primary students at 400 schools will be in the pilot program for the Ultranet system.

The city and regional students will get small laptop computers enabling them to receive and submit work, and communicate with teachers and classmates.

The 24-hour network will eventually connect all government schools and give parents access to student reports, curriculum, assignments and attendance details.

It is believed the State Government will announce the pilot program in late February.
