UH Research Archive: Student diaries: using technology to produce alternative forms of feedback.
"Students at the University of Hertfordshire are increasingly exposed to e-learning through the extensive use of the Managed Learning Environment (MLE), and the heavy investment in various--technologies for classroom learning. This type of learning is disparate to previous generations and for some may be challenging, therefore it is--important to measure how beneficial it is to students learning. Rather than using conventional methods of evaluating students use of elearning, the university has integrated technology into its evaluation--process through the use of video cameras, voice recorders and web logs (blogs). This study is work in progress but follows on from a project conducted during the previous academic year with video diaries. As the study is exploring issues arising from e-learning and using technology in learning, it was thought appropriate to use different media for students--to express their views. Moreover, the institution wanted to use a type of research method which was open and not constrained quantitatively or by the researcher. In this evaluation project, students participation will--involve producing diaries over seven days, given the choice of three media: video cameras, voice recorders and blogs. Students will be asked to comment on various aspects of e-learning around the university, and also teaching and learning in general. The findings of this study will be analysed to explore students views of e-learning and to ensure that students are learning effectively through such methods. In this paper, the method and findings of this study will be presented, and the value of e-learning that students perceived in their studies will--be discussed."

"It is hard, perhaps, to remember now, but until only a decade ago, knowledge and the information necessary to form knowledge was scarce. The delay between discovery, analysis and description, review, publication, dissemination, consensus, and the final formulation intended for novice learners (i.e., a textbook or standard monograph) was measured in years. We had "great books," classic analyses by recognized thinkers, and courses of study for novices could therefore reasonably settle into an unchanging and unchallenged curriculum and resultant set of syllabi. This description was accurate until just yesterday! We have experienced, in the first decade of this new millennium, a cultural epiphany of unthinkable scale and depth. I find myself constantly checking myself when I say a phrase common in our culture--"an apple a day, keeps the doctor away," for example--and telling myself I can now instantly check to see if there is indeed any truth in this old saying, or any other that I come across."

Hope and despair: managing technological change
"In a very funny low budget British movie called ‘Clockwise’, John Cleese plays a school principal with an obsession about punctuality who is asked to give a keynote at a conference. By mistake, he gets on the wrong train, and the rest of the film is about him trying to get to the conference on time. With less than an hour to go, and stuck in a field miles from the conference, and with one last chance to get there, he says: ‘It’s not the despair that destroys you, it’s the hope.’"

Harvard Weblogs: What makes a weblog a weblog?
"At Berkman we're studying weblogs, how they're used, and what they are. Rather than saying "I know it when I see it" I wanted to list all the known features of weblog software, but more important, get to the heart of what a weblog is, and how a weblog is different from a Wiki, or a news site managed with software like Vignette or Interwoven. I draw from my experience developing and using weblog software (Manila, Radio UserLand) and using competitive products such as Blogger and Movable Type. This piece is being published along with my keynotes at OSCOM and the Jupiter weblogs conference. And a disclaimer: This is a work in progress. There may be subsequent versions as the art and market for weblog software develops. Dave Winer, June 2003, Cambridge MA."

Free Online Courses, at a Very High Price - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education
"Enthusiasts think open courses have the potential to uplift a nation of Zieglers by helping them piece together cheaper degrees from multiple institutions. But some worry that universities' projects may stall, because the recession and disappearing grant money are forcing colleges to confront a difficult question: What business model can support the high cost of giving away your "free" content? "With the economic downturn, I think it will be a couple of years before Yale or other institutions are likely to be able to make substantial investments in building out a digital course catalog," says Linda K. Lorimer, vice president and secretary at Yale, which is publishing a 36-class, greatest-hits-style video set called Open Yale Courses. Over the long term, she argues, such work will flourish."

Unit 3: Supporting learning |OER Africa
"Education and training institutions around the world used to be driven by a belief that teaching simply involved imparting knowledge to learners. This was based on the notion that a learner’s brain is an 'empty vessel', into which knowledge can be poured, and that if you poured in the right information, in the right sequence, the learner would automatically learn whatever you wanted her to learn. Although most educators would now disagree with this notion, it is still the case that most educators/ trainers in higher education and workplace training are appointed on the basis of their subject knowledge and not their ability to teach in a learner-centred way. In recent years, the concept of constructivism has helped many educators to go beyond traditional rote learning techniques, and to engage their learners more fully in the learning process. In this unit, we take a bird's-eye look at the many ways in which you can support distance learners in their learning from a constructivist perspective."

Syllabus of CEIT 566: Telecoomunications and Educational Applications
"This course is a graduate level course designed to provide the student with the opportunity to critically explore, examine, evaluate, and experience the design, implementation, and the use of distance learning technologies for education. It is designed to discuss how innovations such as the World Wide Web, multi-user virtual environments, computer-supported collaborative learning, and online communities are shaping the evolution of distance education and distributed learning. In this course a general sense on telecommunications in distance education and their applications will be studied. Since a major chunk of our graduate students already work at a school or are eventually planning to work at schools, and are expected to be the key people in implementation and diffusing technology at their schools, this course is of a high value for our graduate students. How it helps them in their study skills and enhancement of their cognitive skills which they badly require in their learning activities?

Ed/ITLib Digital Library → Mobile learning. Can students really multitask?
The advent of mobile learning offers opportunities for students to do two things at once in an educational context. Students can learn while performing another activity. Two experiments were set up to examine the effect of performing a secondary task while learning with a mobile device. In the experimental group, the participants had to combine a learning task (watching movies on an iPod while sitting at a desk) with a secondary task (screwing). The control group only had to perform the learning task. Additionally, participants of the experimental group received different instructions.

Metcalfe’s Law and Social Media: Size does matter | Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero#
For those new to the concept, Metcalfe’s Law basically states that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users to the network. A lone fax machine is just a copier with a phone line. A lone email account is basically an electronic sticky note system for yourself. As more nodes get added to the network, not only does the network’s value grow, but so does the value of your node, assuming you’re connected in some way to each new node.

HTTPS Everywhere | Electronic Frontier Foundation
"HTTPS Everywhere is a Firefox extension produced as a collaboration between The Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It encrypts your communications with a number of major websites. Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site. The HTTPS Everywhere extension fixes these problems by rewriting all requests to these sites to HTTPS."

"There’s a lot of noise on Twitter. People use a variety of ways to filter through that noise, from following specific lists, finding like-minded people through third party sites, or using a variety of services and websites to find the information that matters to them on Twitter. Another interesting way to filter through what is being said on Twitter, and better yet, analyse it, is to visualize it. This is certainly not a new idea, and we’ve written about some services in the past that will allow you to do just that. With the world around Twitter constantly growing and developing, it’s no surprise that since then there are a ton more services allowing you to visualize your followers, Twitter stream and your own personal Twitter stats."

Let’s Tie the Digital Knot : The Daily Papert
A mathematician, an early pioneer of artificial intelligence, and an internationally recognized seminal thinker about how computers can change learning, Seymour Papert worked with educational psychologist Jean Piaget at the University of Geneva from 1959 to 1963, a collaboration that led Papert to consider using mathematics in the service of understanding how children think and learn. As more and more students gain access to computers and the Internet, Papert offers his prescriptions for consummating the marriage of education and digitalism. He sees most present uses of computers in schools as mere flirtation.

How to Create a Great PowerPoint Presentation
"One thing I like to do is make sure there's a logical story," says Janet Bornemann, the creative director of PowerPoint Studio, based in Acton, Massachusetts. Bornemann, who designs PowerPoint presentations for corporate clients, says that just like any piece of good writing, there needs to be a beginning, middle, and an end to your presentation. Traditionally, in the beginning of the presentation you tell the audience what you plan to cover, in the middle of the presentation you tell them, and in the end, you tell them what you've told them. One clever tip Bornemann recommends is to use five words per line, and five lines per slide.

Responding to Student Writing (audio style) - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education
"Responding to student writing in an effective and timely manner is important to student success. And we want students to succeed, to be good writers. However, students don’t often expect to receive detailed and intricate feedback on their work; they expect to see the dreaded “red pen” marks. They assume that we don’t really read their writing, that we give each page a cursory glance, and that we are only looking for spelling and grammatical errors. This implies–and the students believe–that “writing” is only “writing correctly.”"

"Effectively assessing student writing and mentoring student writers is one of the great challenges of academic life. For many college instructors, helping our students write better is one of our top priorities—in a recent AAC&U survey, more employers said that colleges should play more emphasis on “the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing” than any other skill."

Creating Your Web Presence: A Primer for Academics - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education
"Thinking about how to create and maintain a Web presence might strike some academics as distasteful. After all, why should we go about marketing ourselves? Shouldn’t our work stand on its own? Didn’t we get an advanced degree because we were above such pettiness? Chances are, however, that if you’re reading ProfHacker, you understand that being visible on the Internet can benefit your scholarship, pedagogy, and even service."

Working with Zotero Standalone (Alpha) - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education
"Several weeks ago Jason observed in his Weekend Reading that the folks at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University had released an alpha “standalone” version of Zotero. Zotero has long been a ProfHacker favorite, and many of us here and elsewhere were excited to be able, finally, to use Zotero without using Firefox, the browser for which Zotero was originally designed as an extension. And Zotero Standalone is indeed standalone. It looks exactly like the regular Zotero, but running in a separate, resizable window."

"Our goals for The Privacy Projects are to enhance the practice of privacy by developing and promoting privacy standards, improve trusted management of personal information in the networked environment through research and education, and increase the quality of privacy policies, practices and technologies through collaboration and outreach. We recognize that many other nonprofit organizations are engaged in good and productive work in these areas and we are delighted to work with other in constructive collaboration toward achieving mutual goals. We believe that information privacy is essential to free societies and to free economies. As information about people, things and services increasingly become the resource upon which our economic engines run, securing personal information to protect personal and commercial interests and managing that information in ways that respect the dignity of the individual are no longer optional – they are required to advance."

Edudemic » 15 Terrific Educational Web Apps
"The education technology space has seen an explosion of new offerings in the past few years. What has been missing is a centralized platform for schools and universities to easily evaluate and utilize web apps. Today Google launched an education category in the Google Apps Marketplace designed specifically to help schools and universities easily discover and deploy new web applications that integrate with their existing Google Apps accounts. The new education category includes over 20 applications from 19 vendors ranging from learning management systems (LMS) to student tools and teaching aids – all of which integrate with Google Apps for Education. Each app can be accessed through single sign-on and the Google universal navigation bar and many offer deeper integrations that synchronize with Google Calendar and Documents. This new education category will make it easier for schools to have more web apps at their fingertips, including popular existing apps such as Aviary, Grockit, and LearnBoost as well as the new apps launching today."

"The problem: Creative Commons licensed content is awesome, but attributing it properly can be difficult and confusing. The first rule for re-using openly licensed content is that you have to properly attribute the creator. There are specific requirements for what needs to go into that attribution, but those requirements can be confusing and hard to find. The solution: A simple tool everyone can use to do the right thing with the click of a button. That’s why we’re building Open Attribute, a suite of tools that makes it ridiculously simple for anyone to copy and paste the correct attribution for any CC licensed work."

""Discovering the Civil War," a new exhibit opening on April 30 at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., takes a fresh look at the conflict through the records left by the participants themselves—letters, orders, maps, telegrams, photographs, and broadsides—that are preserved in the National Archives. The exhibit invites visitors to consider and ask questions about the evidence found in the records, listen to a wide variety of voices from the Civil War era, and make up their own minds about the struggle that tore apart these United States."

David Rumsey Historical Map Collection | 19th Century Maps by Children
"In the 18th and 19th centuries, children were taught geography by making their own maps, usually copies of maps available to them in books and atlases at their schools or homes. Below is a group of maps and geographical diagrams made by children in the 19th century; and some of the school atlases, geographies, and wall maps that may have been their sources. These old maps made by children were hand drawn and colored, one-of-a-kind productions, and it is amazing that any have survived down to our time. That they have is due to luck and the efforts of families to preserve the history of their children. These maps have a special poignancy today in the way that they reflect the optimism of youth from another time."

Once Upon a Cybercrime… | ESET ThreatBlog
"57% of Mac users feel it is safe to use their computers without antivirus software where only 27% of PC users feel it is safe to do so. Much of the losses associated with cybercrime are related to phishing attacks. Phishing attacks are just as effective on Macs, Linux, Windows, Solaris, and any operating system since they rely on tricking the user and not upon malicious software or any software vulnerabilities. The Mac offers no immunity to phishing attacks and so we see a virtually equal percentage of victim representation across the board. A significant part of the phishing problem is ignorance. The survey found that less than 50% of Americans even know what phishing is. It is difficult to defend against something one is not aware of."

Facebook Privacy: 10 Settings Every User Needs to Know
"Facebook’s privacy settings are extremely detailed, giving you the ability to fine-tune the privacy aspects of almost every little part of your Facebook account. Unfortunately, for most users, this level of micromanagement makes Facebook’s privacy settings a convoluted mess. Even worse, these settings change often; you may think you know everything there is about them, only to be greeted with a completely different layout and a bunch of new options the next time you visit the dreaded Facebook Privacy Settings page."
